The Hague’s coffee scene has evolved far beyond the traditional Haagse bakkie or bakkie pleur.

Nowadays The Hague (Den Haag) has plenty of cafés. The problem is finding ones that hit the sweet spot: excellent specialty coffee and a setup that doesn’t make laptop users feel like criminals.

This guide is built around koffiework community recommendations, places we’d actually send a friend to for a proper coffee or a focused work session (even if it’s just a productive hour). These cafés aren’t ranked. They’re just reliably good, each with its own pros.

1) Thrive Coffee House#

Best for coffee, pastries, lunch, and good vibes near the beach

Seating area at Thrive in The Hague with wooden tables, an orange bench, magazine shelves, and a street view through the front window.

Inside Thrive in The Hague: espresso bar on the left, blue floor, big windows, and people sitting at the window counter.

Thrive is a relatively new spot that opened in March 2025, and it already feels like it belongs. It’s not a “let me get in two hours of work” kind of place, and that is exactly why it’s special. You come here for delicious specialty coffee, proper pastries and lunch, and a warm vibe that makes you stay longer than planned. It is perfect for catching up with friends or family, and also a great stop if you are around the beach area.

There is a laptop-friendly corner with two tables where laptops are welcome, while the rest stays more social. The owner is super friendly, there is a bookshelf with books, and a couch where you can lean back for a second.

Overall rating: 4.5/5.0
Coffee rating: 4.5/5.0
Work-friendliness: 3.0/5.0
Pro tip: If you want to work, aim for the two laptop tables and keep the rest of the space for vibes, chats, and pastries.

2) Roast Factory#

Best for a hidden roastery oasis with outdoor seating in summer

Roast Factory in The Hague, split image: shelves of coffee bags and plants, and a wide view of the industrial-style café interior and bar.

Roast Factory is exactly what it says on the tin. It is an open coffee bar and a full-on roastery just outside of the city centre. It feels like a hidden oasis. You get that satisfying “real coffee is being made here” feeling, without it turning into an intimidating coffee lab.

The space is open and airy, and in summer the outdoor seating is a big reason to come back. They serve delicious batch brews, espresso-based drinks and definitely great to pair with a cardamom bun. Laptops are allowed, although in the weekends it might be a little more difficult!

Overall rating: 4.5/5.0
Coffee rating: 4.5/5.0
Work-friendliness: 4.0/5.0
Pro tip: Their cinnamon buns pair really well with a batch brew or flat white oat. If the sun is out, grab a seat outside.

3) Duckrabbit Coffee Brewers#

Best for a friendly city-centre vibe, with laptops on weekdays

Duckrabbit in The Hague, split image: working on a laptop at the bar while a barista makes coffee, and an outdoor table with coffees and pastries.

Duckrabbit is not that old either, but it landed immediately. The owner runs the place together with his dad, the vibe is genuinely friendly, and there is even a cute dog that feels like part of the team. It is the kind of café where you can have a quick chat with the barista, meet nice people, and still enjoy a properly brewed cup.

They also work with different guest roasters, so it is always a surprise to see what great espresso or filter you can get.

For working, timing matters. Weekends get too busy to comfortably pull out your laptop, but during weekdays it is definitely an option.

Overall rating: 4.7/5.0
Coffee rating: 4.3/5.0
Work-friendliness: 2.5/5.0
Pro tip: If you want to work, go on a weekday and aim for quieter hours. If it is the weekend, treat it as a coffee-first stop.

4) Papan#

Best for beach-adjacent vibes, delicious lunch, and underrated energy

Inside Papan in The Hague: long café with round pendant lights, a clothing rack, and people sitting and working at tables.

Working at Papan in The Hague: open laptops on a table facing a busy coffee bar with customers and a red espresso machine.

Papan is a genuinely lovely café that somehow also feels close to the beach. It is down-to-earth in the best way, with a nice owner running the place together with his mom. The lunch is delicious, the vibe is relaxed, and it feels very underrated for how good it is.

The only downside at the time of writing is the opening times. They are only open a few days per week, but we are hoping that changes again in the future.

Overall rating: 4.5/5.0
Coffee rating: 4.4/5.0
Work-friendliness: 4.5/5.0
Pro tip: Plan around the opening days, and come hungry. It is one of those places where lunch ends up being part of the reason you stay.

5) Café Drie#

Best neighbourhood gem with excellent filters

Café Drie in The Hague: latte with leaf latte art next to the Café Drie menu and a slice of cake on a plate.

Café Drie ('Three' in Dutch) is located in the spot where SunSun used to be. Unfortunately, the owner of SunSun passed away, and Café Drie later came in its place. The good news is that the place is still a strong neighbourhood café with great coffee and a calm, welcoming vibe.

If you love funky filters, this is a very good stop. Just note that they have one table at the back that is laptop-free.

Overall rating: 4.5/5.0
Coffee rating: 4.5/5.0
Work-friendliness: 3.0/5.0
Pro tip: If you want to work, pick another seat and respect the laptop-free table. Then order a filter and enjoy the calm.

6) Tigershark Coffee#

Best for a world-class cup in a laptop-free zone

At Tigershark in The Hague: yellow espresso cup on a round table with a water glass and glasses case, coffee counter and bags in the background.

Tigershark is a hard yes for coffee and a hard no for laptops. And koffiework still loves it so much that it belongs on this list anyway.

Owner Vinnie really knows how to get you the best cup of coffee, and the changing guest roasters keep it exciting. There is always something new, and it rarely misses. The perfect cafe before or after your beach session.

Overall rating: 4.2/5.0
Coffee rating: 5.0/5.0
Work-friendliness: 1.0/5.0
Pro tip: Show up without your laptop, ask what they are serving today, and let the coffee be the plan.

7) Wakuli#

Best for a minimal interior, summer nitro brews, and laptop-friendly seating

Wakuli in The Hague, split image: a sign about Wakuli’s solidarity with Gaza, and the bright café interior with customers at the counter.

Wakuli is a great default choice when you want reliable specialty coffee and the convenience of multiple locations in the city. Do not expect very funky filters, but we do like their minimal interior and their nitro brews in summer. It is also very laptop-friendly, with a big table that works well for getting things done.

Wakuli in The Hague (three locations):

Pro tip: If you want a reliable place to work with a clean interior and easy seating, Wakuli is a safe choice.
